As parents rushed to bring their children to school, markets and shops were abruptly closed and streets were deserted.
The confrontation between soldiers and police officers in Jalingo is the latest in a string of incidents involving bad blood between officers of both security agencies in Nigeria.
In 2019, when a group of police officers apprehended Bala “Wadume” Hamisu, a wanted kidnapper, in Taraba, a group of soldiers attacked them. The soldiers murdered three police officers and two civilians before freeing the suspect.
The government indicted ten soldiers for their involvement in the attack, but withdrew the charges against them so that the Army could try them first.
