In a historic moment, Sheynnis Palacios from Nicaragua has been crowned the 2023 Miss Universe during the annual beauty pageant held in El Salvador’s capital, San Salvador.
Palacios, who had previously represented Nicaragua in the 2017 Teen Miss Universe pageant and the 2021 Miss World pageant, secured the coveted title. First runner-up was awarded to Anntonia Porsild of Thailand.
A total of 84 countries participated in this year’s Miss Universe, with contestants judged by a distinguished panel including model Halima Aden, “Queer Eye” star Carson Kressley, TikTok influencer Avani Gregg, and former Miss Universe winners Janelle Commissiong of Trinidad & Tobago (Miss Universe 1977) and Iris Mittenaere of France (Miss Universe 2016).

The night’s proceedings began with 20 semi-finalists selected after the preliminary competition and a global fan vote. The field was then narrowed to 10 after the swimsuit round and further reduced after the evening gown round.
Noteworthy moments included the elimination of the first “curvy” contestant in the pageant’s semi-finals, Miss Nepal, and the first contestant to choose a burkini as their swimsuit, Miss Pakistan.
Miss Nicaragua, Sheynnis Palacios emerged winner
The final round saw Sheynnis Palacios, Porsild, and second runner-up Moraya Wilson of Australia in contention. In response to a hot topic Q&A, Palacios expressed admiration for the 18th-century British philosopher and feminist Mary Wollstonecraft, highlighting her groundbreaking contributions.
Miss Colombia, Camila Avella, and Miss Puerto Rico, Karla Guilfú, secured spots in the top five. Spain’s Athenea Pérez, part of the top 10, was crowned Miss Congeniality.
Sheynnis Palacios’ victory is particularly significant as it marks the first time a Nicaraguan woman has been crowned Miss Universe.
