Human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has leveled accusations against the Nigeria Police, alleging active complicity in aiding and abetting criminals instead of investigating serious threats made against customs officials.

In a scathing Twitter post, Effiong criticized the police for targeting journalists and media organizations who exposed criminal activities rather than probing allegations of smuggling. He expressed dismay at the state of affairs, branding it disgraceful for the country.

Effiong lamented that the supposed law enforcement agency was failing in its duty by sheltering criminals instead of upholding justice and order. He highlighted the systemic issues within the Nigeria Police Force, reflecting broader societal challenges.

The controversy erupted after investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo, in collaboration with the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), uncovered threats made by Ibrahim Dende, known as IBD Dende, against armed law enforcement officers from the Nigerian Customs. Despite the gravity of the situation, the police arrested Soyombo and other FIJ board members instead of taking action against Dende.

Notably, Dende’s threats, captured in a viral video, implicated him in serious criminal conduct, yet he has remained untouched by law enforcement. This stark contrast in treatment has raised concerns about the police’s commitment to justice and public safety.

Effiong’s accusations underscore the need for accountability and transparency within Nigeria’s law enforcement agencies. The failure to address criminal behavior effectively undermines public trust and perpetuates a culture of impunity.

As the saga unfolds, questions linger regarding the priorities and integrity of the Nigeria Police in tackling crime and upholding the rule of law.
