What are the Nigerian newspapers’ headlines for today?

 

 

1) The National Economic Council asked the Federal Government on Thursday in Abuja to delay the June deadline for removing petroleum subsidies pending a review of existing plans to provide relief for Nigerians.

2) President Muhammadu Buhari asserts that over 60,000 soldiers were recruited under his watch and that his administration funded the military to increase the fighting capability of the Nigerian Army. Buhari stated this on Thursday at the Nigerian Army Trooping and Presentation of Colours Parade 2023 in Eagles Square, Abuja.

3) President Muhammadu Buhari stated in Abuja on Thursday that while the All Progressives Congress, APC, worked hard to retain power in the 2023 general elections, the opposition political parties lost due to overconfidence. In addition, he argued that a combination of overconfidence, complacency, and poor tactic cost the opposition the victory they desired and plunged them into a post-election crisis.

4) The All Progressives Congress, APC, has distanced itself from the rumoured zoning arrangements for 10th National Assembly leadership positions that have been circulating on social media. In a statement signed by Felix Morka, the APC’s national secretary for publicity, the party stated that it had not yet zoned any positions of the incoming National Assembly’s leadership to any of the country’s six geopolitical zones.

5) Yesterday, a high court in Adamawa State ordered the Department of State Service (DSS) to immediately release three Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) supporters. The presiding judge, the Honourable Justice Christopher Dominic Mapeo, ordered the DSS to release the applicants unconditionally and declared that any further detention would be unlawful.

6) On Thursday, some Nigerian students fleeing the unrest in Sudan became stranded. The government announced the release of N150 million for the hiring of forty buses to transport Nigerians from Sudan to Cairo, Egypt, from where they would be airlifted to Nigeria. However, some of the students being evacuated to safety recounted unpleasant experiences during the trip.

7) The crisis engulfing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) worsened yesterday when the party’s national vice chairman (North-West), Salihu Mohammed Lukman, filed a lawsuit against the party’s national chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, for alleged violations of the party’s constitution.

8) Smart Adeyemi, senator for Kogi West, and Shuaibu Abubakar, son of former Kogi State governor, have petitioned the Federal High Court to nullify the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary for the selection of the party’s candidate in the upcoming governorship election.

9) On Thursday, the Plateau State Police Command reported that ten people were killed when a fuel tanker exploded at the Bauchi Road Junction in Jos, the state capital. Alabo Alfred, the command’s spokesman, disclosed this in a statement made available to the press. Alfred reported that a tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit lost control, crashed, and caught fire on the roadway.

10) Mohammed Abu, 38, was arraigned before the Ogba Magistrates’ Court sitting in the Ikeja area of Lagos State on Thursday for allegedly kidnapping Juliana and Joy Jude from the Alakuko area of the state. The court was informed by Superintendent of Police Kehinde Ajayi that the defendant committed the offence on April 21, 2023.
