What are the Nigerian newspapers’ headlines for today?

 

 

1) Prior to his inauguration, the incoming president, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, pledged to make difficult decisions to reposition the country for the benefit of the citizens and workers. Tinubu requested the cooperation and support of the people in a statement commemorating Workers’ Day in 2023 in order to combat poverty, ignorance, disease, disunity, ethnic and religious hatred.

2) A joint panel comprised of officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission has invited the suspended Adamawa Resident Electoral Commissioner, Hudu Yunusa-Ari, to explain his behaviour during the supplementary elections held on April 15.

 

3) Godswill Akpabio, the former minister of the Niger Delta and the current senator-elect for the Ikot-Ekpene Senatorial District, has informed President Muhammadu Buhari of his intention to serve as president of the tenth Senate. On Sunday, after meeting with the President at his official residence, Aso Rock Villa, in Abuja, Akpabio made this announcement. He also pledged to work closely with the incoming administration in the interest of the youth.

4) In the early hours of Monday, one of the buses transporting stranded Nigerians from Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, to Port Sudan, where they will enter Saudi Arabia, caught fire. Around midnight on Monday, twenty-six buses carrying the stranded Nigerians left Al Razi for Port Sudan.

5) The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has prohibited the importation of Indomie instant noodles. Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of the Agency, stated this in an interview with journalists on Monday.

 

6) The Egyptian government agreed on Monday to allow Nigerians fleeing the conflict in neighbouring Sudan to pass through its territory. The chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, stated yesterday that Egypt agreed to open the border following President Muhammadu Buhari’s intervention.

7) During a dawn attack on Sunday, bandits killed at least forty villagers in the states of Kebbi and Zamfara. Six mobile police officers were among the 36 victims killed at Dan Umaru in the Zuru region of Kebbi State.

8) Yesterday, the former governor of Osun State, Adegboyega Oyetola, expressed sadness over the killing of 25 members of the All Progressives Congress during the recent general elections, stating that “despite the intimidation, harassment, violence, and killings perpetrated by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), people still identified with APC”

 

9) Yesterday, Organised Labour raised the alarm over what it described as the last-minute looting of the treasury by outgoing governors, ministers, and other political officeholders, and urged President Muhammadu Buhari to do everything in his power to stop them.

10) The Abuja Traders’ Association has requested that Usman Baba, the Inspector-General of Police, arrest and prosecute thirty police officers employed by a company to oversee the alleged illegal demolition of structures at the Abuja Shopping Complex. The association drew the IGP’s attention to the arrest, intimidation, and harassment of its executives by police officers acting on the company’s instructions.
