Naira redesign: Uncertainties as FG, States resume Supreme Court legal fireworks

Today, Wednesday, the legal fireworks between the three northern States controlled by the All Progressives Congress, APC, (Zamfara, Kaduna, and Kogi) and the federal government over the controversies surrounding the Naira redesign policy by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, will resume at the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court will hear the merits of the applicant’s (Zamfara, Kaduna, and Kogi) main application and decide whether to vacate the interlocutory injunction it previously granted against the CBN.

 

1) The crisis surrounding the redesign of the naira escalated on Tuesday, when the Central Bank of Nigeria failed to clarify the legal tender status of the old notes. As a result of the refusal of banks, Fuel stations, and merchants to accept the old currency, the development spread confusion across the nation.

2) Chimaroke Nnamani, the former governor of Enugu State and senator for the Enugu East Senatorial District, has filed a lawsuit against the Peoples Democratic Party for disciplinary action taken against him for alleged anti-party activities. A few days prior to his expulsion from the party, Nnamani filed the lawsuit with the Federal High Court of Abuja on February 7, 2023.

3) According to the Independent National Electoral Commission, the Central Bank of Nigeria is in possession of sensitive materials for the 2023 general elections. INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, revealed this information to our reporter on Tuesday.

4) Pastor Nduka Anyanwu, 51, was convicted and sentenced to life in prison by an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court on Tuesday for defiling and impregnating two teenage sisters. The judge, Abiola Soladoye, imposed the sentence after finding Anyanwu guilty of the crime.

5) The governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, has warned that the state will close any commercial bank that rejects old naira notes. Abiodun, frowning at the banks’ behaviour, remarked that since the new naira notes were unavailable, commercial banks must accept the old notes to alleviate the suffering of the people.

6) The premises of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in the Alagbaka neighborhood of Akure, the state capital of Ondo, were seized by armed police yesterday, following a siege by some bank customers.

7) The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Jandor-Funke Campaign Council announced yesterday that plans to petition the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies regarding attacks on its supporters in Lagos Island and other areas of the state have been finalized.

9) Afenifere, a pan-Yoruba political organization, urged President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday to resist any temptation to impose an Interim National Government on Nigerians.
