New Requirements: e-CRVS Certificate and Document Copies

According to the latest guidelines released by the Commission on Sunday, applicants must now provide an electronic civil registration and vital statistics system (e-CRVS) certificate from the National Population Commission (NPC).

In addition to the e-CRVS certificate, NIMC requires copies of other valid documents, including identification and an application letter for modification addressed to the DG/CEO, NIMC. This represents a significant departure from the previous requirement of an affidavit and a payment of N15,000 for age modification and other changes in the NIN system.

One-Time Modification and Exclusive NIMC Enrolment Centers

The Commission emphasized that under the new guidelines, date of birth modification can only be done once in a lifetime and exclusively at NIMC enrolment centers. It sternly warned that licensed agents are prohibited from facilitating date of birth modification and other forms of alterations.

The move has elicited concerns from some Nigerians who fear that the new requirements could exacerbate delays in the modification process at NIMC. There have also been allegations of extortion and intentional delays at NIMC centers, prompting reactions from the recently appointed Director-General, Engineer Abisoye Coker-Odusote.

Coker-Odusote assured the public that she is actively addressing unethical practices within the Commission. She disclosed that over 2.5 million backlog modifications to NIN have been cleared, signaling a commitment to streamlining the process.
