Northern Elders Express Regret Over Voting for Tinubu, Outline Plans for 2027 Elections.
The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has expressed regret over their support for President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 election. Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, the forum’s spokesperson, disclosed this in an interview with Guardian on Tuesday.
Suleiman acknowledged that Nigerians in the northern region are now regretting their decision to vote for Tinubu and are unlikely to repeat the same error in future elections, particularly the 2027 general elections.
He emphasized that the region will prioritize unity and consensus in selecting a candidate for the highest office in Nigeria.
Highlighting the lessons learned from past mistakes, Suleiman stated, “The North made a mistake in voting Bola Tinubu to the presidency in 2023, and it is unlikely that they will repeat the same error in the future.” He stressed the importance of selecting a candidate who can unite the country and govern in the best interests of all Nigerians.

Moving forward, the NEF plans to be more cautious in choosing a presidential candidate. They aim to prioritize someone who is perceived as more inclusive, less controversial, and more aligned with the interests of all regions of the country.
It’s worth noting that President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) according to INEC secured the highest votes from the northern region in the 2023 elections, defeating major contenders including a northerner, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party.
Since assuming office in May 2023, President Tinubu has faced criticism over certain policies of his administration, which have been labeled as anti-masses by the opposition.
Additionally, Northern groups have accused him of lopsided appointments in the federal government.
The NEF’s revelation underscores the evolving dynamics of Nigerian politics and the importance of regional considerations in shaping electoral outcomes.
