Bishop Calls for National Repentance and Hope in Christmas Message

Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto delivered a poignant Christmas message, urging Nigerians to engage in self-examination and repentance for the nation to witness positive change.

In his message titled “Time to Reclaim Nigeria’s Greatness,” Bishop Kukah called upon to anchor his “Renewed Hope Agenda” on a foundation of faith and hope, seeking the restoration of Nigeria’s glory.

The bishop emphasized that Nigeria’s deep and structural issues cannot be resolved merely by palliatives, underscoring the need for a more fundamental approach to address the nation’s challenges.

Drawing a distinction between happiness and joy, Bishop Kukah described happiness as fleeting and momentary, while joy is profound, reflective, and impossible to articulate.

Addressing , Bishop Kukah highlighted the expectations and responsibilities accompanying leadership, emphasizing the need to steer the nation in a new direction.

He urged an end to the exploitation of religious, ethnic, or regional identities and implored the President to address critical issues plaguing the country.

“We want an end to partisanship. The problems of Nigeria are deep-seated and rooted in a culture of corruption that has become the bedrock of governance. This corrupt structure needs to be dismantled,” the bishop remarked.

He passionately called for an end to the ongoing senseless killings, abductions, extortions, and kidnappings plaguing the nation, stressing the imperative to restore the sanctity of human life.

Bishop Kukah also highlighted the need to eliminate blasphemy laws in a democracy, emphasizing that such laws have no place in a secular society.

He urged swift action against perpetrators of violence and the institutionalization of compensation for victims.

In a call for reform, the bishop urged President Tinubu to cleanse the public service of individuals exploiting their positions for personal gain, stressing that such a crucial transformation is vital for the government to effectively serve the people.

Bishop Kukah’s message served as both a challenge and a call to action, urging the nation to embrace repentance, renewal, and a deep commitment to rectify the systemic issues undermining progress and unity in Nigeria.
