The acting national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum, has addressed the growing clamor for the suspension of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and other party members allegedly involved in anti-party activities.

Speaking at a gathering of the PDP Mobilizers Group in Abuja, Damagum made it clear that, under his leadership, the National Working Committee (NWC) will not hastily suspend or dismiss any member, emphasizing the importance of reconciliation for a stronger party leading up to the 2027 elections and other off-season polls.

Addressing the concerns raised about the party’s internal dynamics, Damagum stated, “They are always telling you these people are not doing the right thing.

But when you are in a position of leadership, you are bound by a set of rules, and these rules, even though they are itching you, you don’t apply them—not because of anything, but so that you don’t destroy the house.”

He continued, shedding light on the challenges faced within the party, “I have been seeing the agitations within our platforms, saying the NWC was not doing this or doing that.

This is an opportunity for me to explain. Somebody has said that sometimes when you are not knowledgeable about certain things and you go on saying about your thinking, it will always injure the sensibility of others to understand you.”

Damagum cautioned party members against placing blame on each other for the PDP’s shortcomings in the 2023 presidential election. Expressing pride in the party’s history and his unexpected journey to the role of acting national chairman, he asserted his belief in the PDP’s prominence in the country.

He also revealed that the NWC has approved a 2023 election review and reconciliation committee to investigate and provide recommendations. “We intend to keep this party together and to manage it. This is my mandate,” Damagum concluded.
