Police arrest 19 El-Zakzaky members over violent protest in Abuja
On the basis of a violent protest by hundreds of members of the Shiite Islamic group in Abuja on Thursday, Police have announced that they have arrested 19 members for obstruction, riotous assembly, and unlawful procession, and that they will be charged in court in due course.
SP Josephine Adeh, the FCT Police Command’s spokesperson, made the announcement in Abuja.
It reads, “Following the Federal High Court’s ruling on the release of Sheikh Ibraheem El-international zakzaky’s passport, members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) numbering over Four Hundred (400) staged a protest from the Federal High Court to Eagle Square, blocking roads, intentionally inconveniencing the public, particularly commuters, and demanding the immediate release of their leader’s international passport.
“Upon receiving distress calls from residents fearing for their safety, police operatives were dispatched immediately to the scene to assist officers already monitoring the procession.
“Upon spotting the reinforcement team, IMN members began hurling rocks, Molotov cocktails, and other lethal objects at the officers.
“The unlawful procession was dispersed with minimal force, and nineteen (19) suspects were arrested and will be charged in court in accordance with the law’s due process.”
