Police arrest Kano lawmaker, 160 others for electoral offences

 

During Saturday’s elections for governor and state legislatures, the police command in Kano State arrested 161 individuals, including a member of the state legislature, for alleged electoral violations.

 

Mr. Mohammed Usaini-Gumel, the state commissioner of police, stated this on Sunday while speaking to Ejes Gist Nigeria at the command’s headquarters in Bompai Kano.

According to him, a team of security agents apprehended the suspects after they committed electoral offences such as vote-buying and the destruction of election materials, among others.

 

“Among the suspects is Isyaku Ali-Danja, a member of the Gezawa Constituency, who allegedly led thugs and attempted to attack the Gezawa Local Government Area INEC Collation Centre and the Gezawa Police Divisional Office,” he said.

Usaini-Gumel stated that the suspects would be brought before the courts once the investigation was concluded.

As directed by the Inspector-General of Police, the command had assembled a Special Investigation Team consisting of police officers, lawyers, prosecutors, and trained investigators to expedite the investigation of the suspects.

As the collation of election results continued, Usaini-Gumel reassured the state’s citizens of their safety.

“The command, in conjunction with other security agencies, has begun a serious confidence-building patrol and show of force to counteract any potential emerging threat.

“We call on the peace-loving citizens of Kano State to continue to provide maximum support and cooperation, and to refrain from spreading false information and hate speech capable of disrupting the state’s peace.

 

“Avoid all forms of irresponsible celebrations that may cause death, injury, or property damage when results are announced,” Usaini-Gumel advised.
