The university town of Ekpoma in the Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State experienced a state of panic on Thursday evening when a group of police officers, along with their official vehicle, accidentally ran over a middle-aged man who was already handcuffed.

A video that circulated online the following day showed the handcuffed man lying on the ground in front of the police van. As some individuals engaged in a discussion with the officers, the driver of the police van, seemingly in a state of panic, drove away, running over the man and dragging him along the road for a short distance.

This incident caused an uproar among the onlookers, but their anger was swiftly dispersed by gunshots fired by the policemen.

The spokesperson of the Edo State Police Command, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, released a press statement acknowledging the incident and confirming the arrest of the involved police officers.

According to the statement: “The Edo State Police Command is aware of a circulating video on social media that shows some police officers using a Sienna vehicle for patrol running over a handcuffed young man. Preliminary findings indicate that on 29/06/2023 at approximately 17:00hrs, ASP Magdalene Osayande reported at Ekpoma Divisional Police Headquarters, Ekpoma, Edo State. She stated that while conducting routine stop and search duties with her team of six policemen along Ihumudumu Road, Ekpoma, Edo State, they intercepted an unregistered Lexus car and requested the driver to produce the vehicle’s documents.”

 

 

“During the encounter, the driver became aggressive, refused to comply with the officers’ request, and proceeded to attack them, causing injuries and damaging the police vehicle.

However, he was subsequently apprehended, handcuffed, and identified as Success Ehimare prior to the incident captured in the trending social media video. He was later taken to Irrua Specialist Hospital for medical treatment, where he is currently in good health.”

“In response to the video, CP Mohammed Adamu Dankwara has strongly condemned the actions of the officers involved, describing them as barbaric, inhumane, and unprofessional.

He has ordered the Divisional Police Officer in Ekpoma to identify, apprehend, and bring the officers to the State Police Headquarters in Benin for further investigation. The officers have been arrested and are presently in the custody of the State Criminal Investigation Department.”
