In the early hours of Tuesday, tragedy struck Popular Chiefdom as Alhaji Umaru Buba Nyala, a respected second-class chief, and 21 of his subjects were abducted.

A resident, speaking anonymously, shared the harrowing details, revealing that the kidnappers descended from the hills, targeting the town and kidnapping 22 individuals, including the revered chief. The audacity of the crime raises concerns about the security challenges faced by the region.
Taraba’s police spokesman, Abdullahi Usman, confirmed the disturbing incident, disclosing that among the kidnapped were 15 individuals, including two police officers—an inspector and a sergeant. The fact that law enforcement officers were among the victims adds a layer of complexity to the situation.

Usman stated, “A combined security team is presently on a manhunt to arrest the perpetrators and rescue the victims.” The hunt extends to the mountainous terrain where the kidnappers are believed to have their hideouts.
The police spokesperson shed light on the modus operandi of the criminals, explaining, “Investigation has revealed that they live in these mountain areas. The Pupule area is surrounded by mountains. From Yorro down to Jalingo. Most of them live in these mountains. They descend from the mountains, perpetrate their acts and go back.”
