In a heartbreaking incident at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), a senior lecturer in the Department of Science and Technology Education, Dr. , slumped and passed away in his office on Tuesday, November 14, 2023.

The news has cast a pall of sorrow over the entire university community. Dr. Ojediran, a respected figure in the Faculty of Education, reportedly complained of a headache and appeared weak before collapsing. Despite being swiftly rushed to the institution’s clinic, he could not be revived.

Victor Adesokan, the President of the Faculty of Education Students Association of Nigeria, confirmed the tragic incident. Adesokan, who had been with Dr. Ojediran the night before his demise, expressed concern about the workload on lecturers, citing it as a possible contributing factor to the unfortunate event.

“On Monday night, he complained of headache and stress. We told him to rest. They (lecturers) have too much workload on them. The school needs to recruit more lecturers, especially that of Faculty of Education. For example, a lecturer that is supposed to be a level adviser will now be doing the work of 6 to 7 lecturers,” said Adesokan.Ayodele Isaac Ojediran

He further revealed that the faculty had witnessed three other deaths among lecturers throughout the outgoing year, emphasizing the need for adequate academic personnel and urging authorities to prioritize the well-being of educators.

A close friend of the deceased, Ayodeji Obisesan, confirmed the tragic on his verified Facebook page. He paid tribute to Dr. Ojediran, describing him as a “very nice and humble man to the core” and expressed condolences to the grieving students, friends, colleagues, associates, and family members.

As the university community grapples with this profound loss, questions about the working conditions of academic staff and the well-being of educators are being raised, urging authorities to address the concerns to prevent further tragedies.
