President Tinubu Appoints Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe as Interim Head of National Council on Climate Change

In a significant move towards advancing Nigeria’s climate action initiatives, President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe as the interim Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC). This appointment is pending confirmation by the NCCC Supervisory Council.

The announcement, made by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, underscores the President’s commitment to realizing Nigeria’s green industrial vision. Ngelale emphasized that this appointment aims to enhance investor confidence and unlock sustainable economic value through various climate finance instruments.

Dr. Maduekwe, 39, brings extensive expertise to the role, holding a Bachelor of Law degree, a Master’s degree in Environmental Law & Policy from the University of Dundee, and a Doctorate degree in Law from the University of Hull.

With over 15 years of experience in climate policy development and project implementation, she has previously served as Nigeria’s National Coordinator for Climate Parliament, an international network dedicated to addressing the climate crisis and promoting renewable energy.

In addition to her interim role, Dr. Maduekwe will serve as Co-Chairperson of the Intergovernmental Committee on National Carbon Market Activation Plan (NCMAP).

President Tinubu also announced other key appointments to the NCCC. Ibrahim Abdullahi Shelleng, 40, has been named Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Finance & Stakeholder Engagement. Shelleng, who holds an MBA from Ahmadu Bello University, brings extensive experience from his previous roles in financial institutions and as Head of Business Development for the Nigeria Mortgage Refinance Company PLC. He will assume the position of Secretary of the Intergovernmental Committee on NCMAP and join the Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions, as well as the Presidential Steering Committee on Project Evergreen.

Additionally, Olamide Fagbuji, 44, has been appointed Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Technology and Operations. Fagbuji, a policy analyst and computer scientist, will oversee the digitalization of new procurement processes and cross-departmental optimization initiatives at the NCCC. He previously served as Technical Adviser to the NCCC Director-General on Policy Research and Strategy.
