Presidential Election Tribunal Announces Date for Atiku, Peter Obi to Adopt Final Written Addresses

The parties involved in the two petitions currently before the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) are set to adopt their final written addresses on August 1, according to reliable sources. The court’s Registry has already issued notices to the parties through their legal representatives.

The first petition, marked as CA/PEPC/03/2023, was filed by Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) candidate, and his party, while the second petition, CA/PEPC/05/2023, was filed by Atiku Abubakar, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and his party.

 

Both sets of petitioners are seeking the nullification of President Bola Tinubu’s victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the last presidential election. Each party is praying either to be declared the winner or for a rerun to be conducted.

The parties have already exchanged their final written addresses. Tinubu submitted his reply on July 24 to the final written address earlier filed by Atiku and the PDP.

 

In the case brought by Obi and the LP, they presented 13 witnesses, submitted volumes of documents, and closed their case on June 23. Meanwhile, Atiku and the PDP called 27 witnesses, submitted volumes of documents, and also closed their case on June 23.

Regarding the petition by Obi and his party, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) called one witness, submitted some documents, and closed its case on July 4. INEC closed its case with the same witness on July 3 in Atiku and the PDP’s petition.

 

Tinubu, Shettima, and APC closed their case in both petitions on July 5. Tinubu and Shettima called one witness and submitted documents, including certified true copies (CTCs) of the President’s academic records from Chicago State University and evidence of his trips to the United States. The APC did not call any witnesses but submitted documents, including court judgments, in its defense for both petitions.

The three respondents have urged the court to dismiss both petitions, arguing that the petitioners failed to provide credible evidence to support their cases.

Earlier, on July 14, parties involved in the petition by the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) adopted their written addresses, and the court reserved judgment for a later date.

 

The Presiding Justice of the court, Justice Haruna Tsammani, hinted that judgments for all three petitions will be delivered on the same day.
