2022 in retrospect: Basketmouth, Funke Akindele, other crashed celebrities marriages
In the year 2022, the relationships and marriages of prominent Nigerian celebrities encountered numerous difficulties.
Due to irreconcilable differences and other circumstances, some celebrities in the entertainment industry experienced marriage breakdowns in the year under review.
Ego, a lack of understanding, domestic violence, infidelity, financial independence, and the pursuit of happiness or fame are a few of the factors and problems that have caused celebrity marriages to fail.
Basketmouth, Do2dtun, Oritsefemi, Korra Obidi, Funke Akindele, Julius Agwu, and Gideon Okeke are some famous people whose marriages have failed.
Basketmouth
After 12 years of marriage, comedian Bright Okpocha—better known by his stage name Basketmouth—announced his divorce from wife Elsie in a public statement on Thursday, December 22.
Basketmouth said, “After much deliberation, my wife and I have made the difficult decision to end our marriage.” He described the separation as an unavoidable situation.
Do2dtun
Omotayo, the wife of popular Nigerian on-air personality Oladotun Ojuolape Kayode, also known as Do2dtun, filed for divorce from the host of Cool FM on December 16, 2022, citing forced abortion, domestic abuse, and emotional abuse.
Julius Agwu
In keeping with the same trend, Julius Agwu, a well-known Nigerian actor and stand-up comedian, announced during an Instagram live session with well-known broadcaster and socialite Ifedayo Olarinde, a.k.a. Daddy Freeze, that he and his wife, Ibiere Maclayton, had separated.
Gideon Okeke
As separation rumours followed the couple for more than a year, Nollywood actor Gideon Okeke announced his divorce from his wife, Chidera Uduezue, on his Instagram story in October 2022.
Oritse Femi
Similarly, Oritsefemi Majemite Ekele, a Nigerian musician better known by his stage name Oritse Femi, and Nabila Fash announced their divorce in October.
When Ifedayo Olarinde, also known as Daddy Freeze, a well-known Nigerian Romanian broadcaster and socialite, interviewed her, Nabila revealed that their marriage had ended due to the singer’s alleged adultery.
Cha Cha Eke
Cha Cha Eke, a well-known Nollywood actress, announced the dissolution of her marriage on her Instagram page in June 2022. She posted a mysterious message in which she claimed that her life was in danger.
“Leave now Alive, or Leave a Corpse,” she said. Her fans responded to the post in a variety of ways, the majority of whom questioned whether she had ever experienced domestic violence.
Funke Akindele
Additionally in June, Abdulrasheed Bello, also known as JJC Skillz, confirmed on his Instagram page that his six-year union with renowned Nollywood actress Funke Akindele had come to an end following several rumours of a breakup. The public was informed by JJC Skillz that they are “pursuing separate lives.”
Funke, who was previously married to Lagos politician Kehinde Oloyede, is currently the running mate of Peoples Democratic Party candidate Olajide Adediran, also known as Jandor.
Yewande Adekoya
Yewande Adekoya, an actress, announced in April that she had divorced her husband of eight years, Abiodun Ishola Thomas, due to emotional abuse.
Anita Obidi Korra
Anita Obidi Korra, also known as Korra Obidi, a well-known Nigerian dancer and model based in America who was wed to Dr. Justin Dean, an American physician and sports therapist, experienced a breakdown in her marriage in March. This news shocked many of their social media followers.
Infidelity, narcissism, and a lack of accountability were the reasons Dean gave on his social media accounts for ending the marriage.
Why Marriages of Celebrities are Crashing?
In response to this trend, David Ogaba, a relationship counsellor based in Abuja, named work schedule, social media rumour, infidelity, lack of trust, and misunderstanding as among the reasons for celebrity divorce in an interview with ejesgist.ng.
Because they are financially independent and do not depend on the income of their partners, celebrities are able to file for divorce more frequently, he continued.
