On Saturday in Lagos, Bello, a lecturer in the Department of Religions and Peace Studies at Lagos State University (LASU), delivered these remarks at the 9th Ramadan Lecture of Anwar-Ul Islam College, Agege, Old Students’ Association (ACAOSA).

“Islamic Perspective on Good Governance: Any Lessons for Nigeria?” was the topic of the guest speaker’s lecture.

Bello stated that the topic was pertinent and necessary due to the fact that every discerning Nigerian was now concerned about the state of the nation.

According to him, on May 29, the nation will have experienced 24 years of continuous democratic rule under the leadership of the PDP and APC, but the question is whether Nigerians have benefited from good governance.

He stated that Nigerians could not be said to have enjoyed good governance in light of their socioeconomic difficulties.

“All Nigerians are responsible for good governance. We congratulate those who have been elected, but Nigerians should keep them on their toes.

“We must set the agenda, we must tell them what we want in terms of education, infrastructure, the environment, and health, among other areas. We should not abandon them, but rather counsel them.

“It is not sufficient for us to congratulate them. Sen. Bola Tinubu has been elected president and will be inaugurated; therefore, we must set his agenda.

“Now is not the time for congratulatory messages; let’s focus on education, the environment, and public morality.”

“Take a look around, there is so much disorder in society. Additionally, we must pray for them,” he said.

In order for the nation to have good governance, the cleric stated that the President-elect, his vice president, and all elected public office holders should be praised when they perform well and criticised when they behave improperly.

Bello stated that when there is good governance, there will be peace, prosperity, an abundance of resources for everyone, and less insecurity.

“The President-elect and Vice President-elect have a tremendous obligation to unite our minds. As a nation, we are so divided by religion, ethnicity, and social class.

“Their first task is to find a way to assuage our feelings and unite us; we can only move forward when we have a common goal and a unified mind,” Bello said.
