Sudan: FG Gives Update On Evacuation of Nigerians

The Federal Government has authorised the Nigeria Air Force (NAF) C-130H aircraft and the Air Pace aircraft to fly in Egyptian airspace in order to evacuate Nigerians stranded in Sudan.

In Abuja, the Permanent Secretaries of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Janet Olisa, and the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Dr. Sani Gwarzo, issued a joint press statement confirming this.

“Arrangements have been made to airlift all Nigerians who have already fled on their own to neighbouring countries for safety.

“However, forty buses have been secured in Sudan to transport the students and other Nigerians from Khartoum to the Aswan border in Egypt, which is one of the identified safe reception borders,” the statement said.

However, according to the federal government, the initial hiccups during the transportation of stranded Nigerian students from Khartoum, where bus drivers stopped and dropped off the students due to nonpayment of transportation fees, had been resolved.

“Because of the intervention of some Nigerian leaders, some Nigerian students who made their way to the Ethiopian border were permitted to enter Ethiopia.

“The students are in good health. Similarly, a second group of Nigerians assisted by the government of the United Arab Emirates has arrived in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and arrangements have been made for their return home, the statement confirmed.

The government announced that it has already established a Situation Room to oversee the evacuation drill.
