Supreme Court Affirms Dauda Lawal as Zamfara Governor: Overturns Appeal’s Inconclusive Verdict.
In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court has upheld Dauda Lawal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the duly elected governor of Zamfara state. The five-member panel overturned the Court of Appeal’s judgment, deeming it “perverse.
Dauda Lawal Declared winner
In March 2023, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Lawal the winner of the Zamfara governorship election with 377,726 votes.
Bello Matawalle of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who garnered 311,976 votes, contested the outcome, alleging INEC’s failure to include results from certain wards.
In September 2023, the tribunal dismissed Matawalle’s petition as meritless, imposing a N500,000 fine against the petitioners.
Subsequently, in November 2023, the Court of Appeal in Abuja declared the Zamfara governorship election inconclusive, annulling Lawal’s victory and mandating a fresh election in Maradun, Birnin-Magaji, and Bukyun LGAs.
The Supreme Court’s recent ruling marks a pivotal moment, affirming Lawal’s victory and dispelling the inconclusive verdict.
