Why FCT civil service commission

This landmark decision finds its roots in the year 2018 when the National Assembly passed a bill to establish the CSC specifically for the FCT. The bill received the assent of the then-acting President, Yemi Osibanjo.

Over the years, civil servants in the FCTA had grappled with limited prospects for career advancement, with directors within the administration often finding their path to the pinnacle of their careers obstructed due to the absence of a functioning Civil Service Commission.

Mr. Wike highlighted that while the law to establish the commission had been enacted, it had remained unimplemented for various reasons. Some were concerned about the potential implications, and others were wary of losing their power and influence.

The minister explained that his awareness of this legislation was relatively recent, prompting him to address the matter with President Tinubu. He emphasized the need for a renewed hope agenda for civil servants who had been disheartened by the lack of career progression opportunities.

“Why should I be working because, at the end of the day, I can’t get to the apex of my career? As such, we must implement that 2018 law passed by the National Assembly,” Mr. Wike expressed.

He acknowledged that there might be challenges ahead in implementing the law, as no law is without imperfections. However, the true extent of these challenges would only become clear during the implementation process.

With the establishment of the Civil Service Commission, civil servants in the FCT will now have the opportunity to advance beyond the director level, with the possibility of ascending to the position of permanent secretary. This development aligns with the broader goal of instilling a renewed sense of hope among the civil service community.

Mr. Wike praised President Tinubu’s leadership and his willingness to undertake initiatives that others might shy away from. He emphasized the importance of confidence in making the right decisions and taking positive actions, noting that a key challenge facing is effective leadership.
