Ogun State Governor Asserts Nigeria’s Ownership of Tongeji Island, Pledges Development Effort

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun,  has unequivocally stated that Tongeji Island is an integral part of Nigeria, confirming that the Republic of Benin has not contested its ownership.

This declaration was made during a courtesy visit by the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, Nigerian Navy, Rear Admiral Mustapha Hassan.

Governor Abiodun emphasized that Tongeji Island and its inhabitants are firmly connected to Nigeria, and do not have any affiliation with another country.

He reassured that efforts would be made to provide essential services for the people on the island, including addressing issues related to power, water supply, and healthcare facilities.

He acknowledged the security challenges faced by Ogun Waterside due to its proximity to the Delta region, where incursions from the Niger Delta have led to criminal activities.

The Governor stressed the necessity of a Naval presence in this area, especially as it is earmarked for the State’s seaport.

Abiodun revealed that the Ogun State Port, located in the Olokola area, is in the planning stages and will be a significant responsibility for the Navy.

He expressed confidence that this project, which has been in development for years, will soon come to fruition.

Furthermore, the Governor highlighted the Federal Government’s initiative, which will necessitate extensive Navy presence in the territorial waters around Ogun Waterside. This initiative is poised to have a substantial impact on the region.

Governor Abiodun conveyed his administration’s determination to transform Ogun State into an oil-producing state.

He assured the Nigerian Navy of the State’s commitment to establishing a committee for collaborative efforts in identifying areas of partnership.

The Flag Officer Commanding, Rear Admiral Mustapha Hassan, commended Ogun State for fostering a conducive business environment, solidifying its position as the nation’s industrial hub.

He emphasized the potential of Tongeji Island in contributing to Nigeria’s oil production and advocated for the provision of essential amenities, including jetties, healthcare facilities, water supply, and electricity for the island’s inhabitants.

Rear Admiral Hassan suggested that the island could be developed into a tourism center, given its promising potential.
