Tragedy Strikes Peacekeepers: The Delta State Nigerian Army Ambush

In a heart-wrenching development from Delta State, Nigeria, the Nigerian Army has suffered a grievous loss with the killing of several of its officers, who were on a noble peacekeeping mission aimed at quelling the unrest between two feuding communities. The fallen heroes include a Lieutenant Colonel, two Majors, one Captain, and 12 soldiers, marking a somber day for peace efforts in the region.

Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, confirmed the tragic incident, which occurred as the soldiers ventured into Okuama community with the goal of rescuing a hostage, Mr. Anthony Aboh, caught in the crosshairs of a protracted land dispute between the Okuama and Okoloba communities. Tragically, this mission of mercy turned deadly when they were ambushed and brutally killed.

This catastrophic event unfolded on Thursday, 14 March 2024, when troops from the 181 Amphibious Battalion in Bomadi Local Government Area responded to a distress call emanating from the communal crisis. Their arrival was met with hostility, as they were surrounded and killed by community youths.

Although the Delta State Government has been informed, and some arrests have been made, the military remains steadfast in its commitment to preserving peace and security across the nation.

The incident has not only escalated tensions but also led to retaliatory measures, with more casualties reported as a result of subsequent military actions. The community of Okuama, particularly, saw an invasion that resulted in additional loss of life and property, casting a dark shadow over the region’s peace prospects.

In the wake of these events, human rights activist Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, has called on the federal government to ensure that those responsible for the killings are brought to justice without delay.
