Gombe Election Petitions Tribunal Orders Rerun, Nullifies Speaker’s Victory.

The Election Petitions Tribunal in Gombe State has delivered a significant verdict, nullifying the victory of Abubakar Luggerewo, the incumbent Speaker of the Gombe State House of Assembly, and has mandated a rerun to take place within the next 30 days.

This pivotal decision comes in the wake of a contentious election where Luggerewo, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), was initially defeated by Bashir Abdullahi from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The dispute centered on the cancellation of results in polling units 001, 024, and 014 in the Kumo East area.

The tribunal, presided over by Justice Michael Ugar, meticulously examined the circumstances surrounding the cancellation of these polling units by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and determined that it was an erroneous decision.

In its judgment delivered on Tuesday, the tribunal ordered a rerun to be held specifically in Kumo East 018. This rerun election aims to establish the true winner of the initial election, providing clarity and resolution to the electoral dispute.

The nullification of the Speaker’s victory and the subsequent order for a rerun election have sparked discussions and anticipation in Gombe State. As the legal process unfolds, all eyes will be on the forthcoming rerun to determine the final outcome of this closely contested electoral battle.
