The NYSC management shared this information through its social media platforms. The collaboration aims to register 12.7 million births in 2023, including the issuance of birth certificates containing the names and nationalities of children below the age of 5 in Nigeria. This initiative will cover 21 states, 456 local government areas (LGAs), and 4,978 wards across the country.

Dr. Ibrahim Sesay, the Chief Child Protection of UNICEF, announced the partnership during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NYSC and NPC at the National Directorate Headquarters in Abuja. He mentioned that 800 corps members would participate in the exercise, working alongside NPC officials.

Dr. Sesay emphasized that the registration of births and the issuance of birth certificates are crucial for establishing legal identities for all Nigerians.

The data of each child will be stored in the digital birth registration system under the custody of the National Population Commission. Dr. Sesay expressed optimism about the success of this tripartite collaboration. Mr. Omotade Ayodele, the Director of Corps Welfare and Health Services, revealed that while UNICEF leads the initiative according to the MoU, the NYSC is open to partnering with organizations willing to contribute to national development.

 

Brigadier General Yusha’u Dogara Ahmed, the Director General of NYSC, applauded the initiative. He requested adequate security measures and appropriate remuneration for the corps members involved in the exercise. Dr. Tellson Ojogun Osifo, the Director General of NPC, also expressed the commission’s readiness to collaborate effectively.
