WAEC Announces Transition to Computer-Based WASSCE for Candidates

 

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has disclosed its decision to introduce a Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) aimed at private candidates.

The announcement was made through a statement from the Public Affairs Department, signed by Moyosola F. Adesina, the Acting Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, Yaba, Lagos.

In alignment with global educational standards, WAEC’s Nigeria National Office has strategically planned to transition its WASSCE for Private Candidates Examination from the traditional Paper and Pencil Test to a more technologically advanced Computer-Based Examination (CBE).

This transformation is scheduled to kick off with the WASSCE for Private Candidates, 2024 – First Series, slated for February 2024.

The statement elaborated on the format of the examination, stating, “While the Objective Tests will be fully Computer Based, the Essay and Test of Practical papers will be hybrid, in which the examination questions will be delivered on screen, and candidates are required to write answers on the answer booklets given to them.”

To ensure accessibility, the computer-based examination will be conducted in urban centres and cities. Notably, candidates with special needs have been accommodated in the examination plan, demonstrating WAEC’s commitment to inclusivity.

Prospective candidates and stakeholders are advised to mark their calendars as the registration for the computer-based WASSCE for Private Candidates is scheduled to commence on Monday, December 18, 2023. This crucial step towards embracing technological advancements in the examination process signifies a significant move by WAEC, ushering in a new era of contemporary assessment methods.
