“We view our mandate as an opportunity to right the wrongs and rekindle the hope of the electorate that a better Benue is not only possible but imminent,” he said.

The governor, who also paid tribute to the late democracy icon Moshood Abiola, stated that his administration would not be a government for any particular political party, ethnic group, or religion, and that all residents of Benue would be treated with fairness, dignity, and respect.

He elaborated, “Again, as we observe Democracy Day in Benue State, we owe you all explanations for the few significant decisions we have made thus far. We observed that the recruitment/appointment process was riddled with irregularities.

Specifically, the previous administration’s Civil Service Secretariat recruited 2,194 individuals.”The State Universal Basic Education (SUBEB) employed 3,028 instead of the allotted 2,500, while 5,000 replacements were made.

The Teaching Service Board (TSB) employed 2,500 teachers, or 120 for four Grant-in-Aid schools. Replacements were 2,484. In the entirety of the operation, due process was not observed. In addition, the employment was lopsided in favour of a few Local Government Areas and did not take into account the principle of state character; no budgetary provision was made for the recruitments, nor was there any advertisement in any media as required by the Service’s rules; and no interviews were conducted to determine the suitability or otherwise of candidates.

The Solicitor-General of the State was not involved in any phase of the hiring process.”

In addition, the governor disclosed that the appointments of individuals to the post of Permanent Secretaries between January and May of 2023 were reversed because the appointments were politically motivated, the required due process was not followed, and their eventual postings were primarily for cover up.

Alia appealed to the state’s civil servants for patience and understanding, noting that his administration was working diligently to resolve problems so that, as of June 25, they could expect payment alerts.
