The Yarima of Sokoto, Alhaji Shehu Malami, a well-known businessman, passed away at the age of 85.
It was revealed to this online newspaper that Malami passed away on Monday in Cairo, Egypt, where he resided. He had a brief illness.
The death of the former Nigerian High Commissioner to South Africa was confirmed in a statement released by the Sokoto State government late on Monday night.

“I learned of the passing of Alhaji Shehu Malami, an esteemed son and one of the leaders of the Sokoto Caliphate, with sublime submission to Allah’s (SWT) will.
The late potentate, who was 85 years old, was a successful banker and industrialist whose imprint can still be seen on the country.
The late Alhaji Malami, who was widely educated and known as “the Oxford man,” received his early education in Sokoto.

He attended elementary schools in Bida and Katsina as well. For his GCE ordinary and advanced levels, he later attended various colleges in England.
He eventually earned a law degree from the Middle Temple in London and spent time as a visiting scholar at Wolfecon College in Cambridge. He was also a member of St. Anthony’s College in Oxford as an associate member.
“Back home, he served Sultan Saddiq Abubakar III as Private Secretary and later as Special Assistant. He also worked as a broadcaster for the BBC for a while.
He advanced, eventually becoming a banker and a technocrat. As a representative of the Geneva, Switzerland-based World Economic Forum Foundation’s International Advisory Council, he made himself known on the global stage.
He would be remembered as a repository of the standards and principles that keep the Sokoto Caliphate functioning.

He was humble and astute. On the national stage, his understanding of the nation, its politics, and economy would also be missed, particularly at this point in another democratic transition.
“I join in praying for the rest of the soul of His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, on behalf of the government and good people of Sokoto state.
“May he find refuge in Jannatul Firdaus. May Allah give his family and loved ones the strength to endure this unrecoverable loss. Amin,” reads the statement that Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal signed.
