Benue High Court stops PDP from expelling Ortom

A High Court in Benue State’s capital, Makurdi, has issued a temporary restraining order prohibiting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), its National Working Committee (NWC), National Executive Committee (NEC), its national officers (elected or appointed) from expelling Governor Samuel Ortom from the party.

Yesterday, Justice A. I. Itoyonyiman issued the order in response to a lawsuit filed on Wednesday.

Ortom was listed as the plaintiff/applicant, while the PDP and INEC were listed as the first and second defendants/respondents.

Among the reliefs Ortom requested and was granted was a restraining order prohibiting the PDP from expelling, suspending, or otherwise punishing him pending the outcome of the Motion on Notice for interlocutory injunction.

The court also enjoined the PDP from seeking to disqualify the governor of Benue State from contesting or from being placed on the ballot for the February 25 National Assembly election, in which he is running on the party’s platform for the Benue North West senatorial district.

In a similar fashion, the court issued an interim injunction prohibiting INEC from refusing, for any reason, to include Ortom’s name on the ballot for the Benue North West senatorial election.

The matter is scheduled to be heard on February 24.

Nyesom Wike, leader of the G-5 and governor of Rivers State, obtained a similar restraining order against the PDP and the INEC a few weeks ago.
