Ortom caused high-level confusion among PDP ranks when he announced as his preferred 2023 presidential candidate.

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has ended weeks of speculation by publicly endorsing Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party.

Bad weather prevented Obi from flying to Makurdi for a townhall meeting organised by the Inter-Party Advisory Council in support of Obi-presidential Datti’s ambition.

But Ortom made a physical appearance at the gathering held at the Royal Choice Inn in Makurdi, where he praised the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, whom he described as one of the top three candidates and an outstanding candidate who will be able to eradicate insecurity and unite the country.

He stated that Obi’s candidature came at a time when Nigerians must set aside their emotions and save the country by looking for leaders who fear God and can provide gainful employment for the youth.

Therefore, the governor urged Nigerians not to vote along party lines, but rather to consider individuals with credentials, character, competence, and educational backgrounds who are capable of delivering and reviving the country’s socioeconomic fortunes.

Ortom also stated that the people must create a new Nigeria that provides citizens with equity, fairness, and justice, and he emphasised the need for the people to reject all partisan sentiment because ’s major political parties have failed.

He added that Obi was superior to other candidates, such as Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in terms of age, capacity, and others.

Mike Inalegwu, the State Commissioner of Information, Culture, and Tourism, informed journalists earlier in the day that the governor had instructed all members of his cabinet to attend the town hall meeting and to support Obi in the upcoming presidential election.

The governor said in the video: “Rise up and support Peter Obi.”

Following his statement, the youths gathered at the meeting began chanting, “Obi”, “Obi”, “Obi” in unison.
