Senator Adego Eferakeya, who represented Delta Central in the National Assembly from 2007 to 2011, has passed away.
According to sources close to the family, renowned professor of pharmacology and toxicology Eferakeya passed away on Tuesday at the age of 78 after a brief illness.
Eferakeya is a Nigerian politician who was elected Senator for the Delta Central constituency in Delta State, Nigeria on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) platform in April 2007.
He succeeded the deceased Senator Felix Ibori and was succeeded by the deceased Senator Akpor Pius Ewherido, who passed away in 2013.
He was appointed to the Environment, Privatization, Health, Ethics & Petitions, Establishment & Public Service, and Establishment & Public Service committees.
In July 2009, he called for the creation of new states as part of the process to amend the Constitution of 1999.
In October 2009, he led the Senate debate on a bill to establish a national DNA data bank to aid in criminal investigations and the identification of unidentified bodies. The bill’s second reading was successful.
He objected to the Federal government’s October 4 deadline for ending the amnesty granted to militants in the Niger Delta, arguing that the deadline was premature.
Born on 9 July 1940 in Adagbrasa of Aghalokpe, Okpe Local Government Area, Delta State, Nigeria, he received a B Pharm from the University of Ife in 1969, a PhD from the University of Kansas Medical Centre (United States) in 1975, and an MD (Pharmacologist and Toxicologist, Physician) from the University of Kansas in 1977.
In 2005, he was appointed Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Benin.
He served as Chairman of the Hospital Management Board, Head of the Department of Pharmacology, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Secretary of the Urhobo Political Forum Elders Council, and Grand Knight of the Sepele Sub-Council before running for the Senate.
He has authored or co-authored a number of articles, focusing on pharmacy and blood pressure in particular.
As of the time this report was written, neither his family nor the esteemed Okpe Council of Chiefs had issued an official statement on his passing.
