What are the Nigerian newspapers’ headlines for today?

 

1) The Nigerian Labour Congress stated that it plans to have a meeting with the incoming administration of the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, to discuss matters related to the removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit, commonly known as petrol. The statement emphasised that the organization’s stance on fuel subsidy remained the same. It stated that the government should prioritise the restoration of Nigeria’s refineries before removing petrol subsidy.

2) The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, has ordered the arrest of Seun Kuti. A statement was released on Saturday night by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who is the Force Public Relations Officer. Seun Kuti was recorded engaging in physical altercation with a police officer who was in uniform.

 

3) 31 members of the All Progressives Congress in Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State have been suspended by the party. The party sent a letter to the state chairman, Mr Ade Adetimehin, which was shared with our correspondent on Saturday. The party’s decision was based on a report from a committee that was established to investigate the issue.

 

4) The village head of the Fugge community in the Rijau local government area, Mallam Abdullahi Zaure, and 49 others have been abducted. Yesterday, it was reported that an incident occurred on Friday afternoon when a group of individuals on motorcycles entered the village, causing residents to feel panicked by shooting into the air.

5) Chinedu Eleliam, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State, has reportedly been abducted by individuals suspected to be herdsmen. Capt. Tony Enoch was reportedly shot dead by gunmen approximately 48 hours ago. He was a kinsman of the Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma and the Presidential Campaign Council Chairman for APC 2023 Presidential election in Oru East LGA.

 

6) The Oduduwa Frontiers, a socio-political group, expressed their disapproval of any interference in the selection process of the leadership of the National Assembly by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other influential groups. They believe that lawmakers should have the freedom to elect their presiding officers. The National President, Kolawale Adediji Kazeem, stated that there should be a fair competition for members to exercise their democratic rights.

7) The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, clarified that the Federal Government is not seeking new loans to offset the impact of the anticipated fuel subsidy removal, contrary to media reports. She stated that there is currently a facility of $800 million from the World Bank awaiting parliamentary approval to alleviate the impact of subsidy removal.

8) The Lamidi Apapa faction of the Labour Party has requested an investigation into Peter Obi and other individuals who are reportedly involved in efforts to impede the inauguration of President-elect, Bola Tinubu on May 29, 2023. Abayomi Arabambi, the National Publicity Secretary of the LP faction, informed journalists in Abuja on Saturday.

 

9) Saint Obi, an actor who gained popularity, has been reported to have passed away at the age of 57. It was reported that the actor passed away on Monday after dealing with a prolonged illness that was not specified. The Actors Guild of Nigeria has not yet released an official statement regarding the death of the movie star, which is said to be due to a family dispute.

10) Dr. Ayodele Joseph, the Chief Medical Director of Ayodele Hospital in Ilorin, Kwara State, has stated that the female nurse he was accused of sedating and raping is his girlfriend. During the incident, Ayodele was performing a medical procedure on a nurse at his hospital.
