Police Inspector, Vigilante Members And Others Arrested For Killing Two Women Accused Of Witchcraft In Adamawa

 

Fourteen suspects, including a police inspector, Ahmed Suleiman and vigilantes, have been arrested in connection with the murder of two women accused of practicing witchcraft in the Roma community of Song Local Government Area, Adamawa state.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, said in a statement released on June 11, 2023, that the women were stripped naked and brutally beaten by a mob.

The suspects were arrested after a video of the mob action went viral on social media, according to the PPRO.

“Adamawa State Police Command came across an unfortunate video that has gone viral in some sections of the media, particularly social media, in which an Inspector of Police and some members of Vigilantes attached to Dumne Divisional Police Headquarters were seen maltreating and assaulting three (3) women in an unprofessional manner at Roma community, Dumne Development Area in Song Local Government Area,” read the statement.

“The women were stripped naked and brutally beaten by the mob because they were accused of witchcraft, and two of them were brutally murdered as a result.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Afolabi Babatola, expressed shock over the unprofessional conduct exhibited by the aforementioned Inspector, Ahmed Suleiman, as well as members of the Vigilante, as seen in the viral video,”

“Infuriated by the unfortunate occurrence, the Commissioner of Police immediately dispatched the Deputy Commissioner of Police, who arrested those observed mistreating and assaulting the women.”

“Also, the Chief of Police has ordered a thorough investigation into the immediate and remote cause(s) of this heinous incident, as well as swift justice.

“The commander-in-chief guaranteed that any act of disobedience or lawlessness would not be tolerated under his command, and that those responsible for this heinous crime against humanity would be brought to justice.”
