On Monday, the government of Delta State’s Ughelli North Local Government Area forcibly evacuated street sellers and hawkers along the ever-busy East/West Road at Otovwodo-Ughelli Junction.

The LGA Chairman, Godwin Adode, stated that the exercise was “performed in accordance with the Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori’s directive.”

He stated, “The state Governor, His Excellency Sheriff Oborevwori, was in Ughelli last week and he directed that all traders and businessmen trading along the East/West Road by Otovwodo Junction should relocate within one week of grace, or be prepared to face the long arm of the law.”

“The need to evacuate all those trading along the roadside, and those who built temporary structures under the high tension wire has become imperative as their actions pose a danger to the lives of the people,” said the council chairman, who was on the scene to supervise the exercise.

Adode cautioned street vendors, particularly those selling goods along walkways, not to defy the state government’s authority.

“From now on, the official task force will be on the ground to arrest any lawbreaker, and they will be severely punished to serve as a deterrent to others.”

“Successive governments in the state have advised street traders and marketers displaying wares along the walkways to leave, but they have refused to comply with government orders.”

“We are here today to enforce the state government’s directives.” We are removing all unlawful constructions, caravans, and other structures along the route to facilitate vehicular and people circulation.”
