A House of Representatives member is on life support.
Former Edo State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt Hon. Marcus Onobun, is currently in a coma following a serious car accident while en route to Abuja.
The incident occurred on Wednesday when Onobun was traveling from Benin to Abuja after missing his flight. Sources indicate that the accident took place near Ekpoma, his hometown, along the poorly-maintained Ekpoma-Abuja highway. According to reports, the vehicle he was in veered off the road, leading to multiple somersaults before coming to a halt in a ditch.

Prompt actions were taken by his aides and sympathizers present at the scene of the accident, rushing Onobun to an undisclosed medical facility for treatment. The lawmaker’s dark-brown Mitsubishi SUV sustained significant damage, with the airbag system detached, the windshield shattered, and the roof disfigured.
An anonymous aide of Onobun confirmed that the former Speaker is currently in critical condition. However, there is optimism that he will make a full recovery, as his doctors have assured.
It is worth noting that Marcus Onobun recently emerged victorious in the 2023 general elections, securing a seat in the House of Representatives to represent the Esan West/Esan Central and Igueben Federal Constituency, running on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Prior to this role, he served as the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly from 2020 until his election to the federal legislature.
