Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has issued a swift directive to halt the operations of commercial motorcyclists, commonly known as Okada, in the Umuahia and Aba metropolises.
In an official statement released on Sunday evening and signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Kazie Uko, Governor Otti announced that effective from Monday, August 14, 2023, the use of motorcycles for commercial purposes within the Umuahia and Aba townships would be prohibited.
The governor emphasized that any motorcycle spotted on the streets of these urban areas being used for such purposes would be confiscated by security agencies.
Furthermore, the governor has instructed the security agencies in these cities to take immediate action in apprehending any individual who violates this order, paving the way for potential prosecution.

Despite the absence of a specified reason for the ban on the use of Okada, sources indicate that this move is part of the state government’s strategic efforts to combat rising crime rates within specific areas of the two cities.

These critics are urging the Abia State government to ensure that the ban is not solely focused on civilian Okada riders but also encompasses security personnel who utilize motorcycles for their duties.
