Prominent news anchor, Dr. Reuben Abati, has taken a critical stance on Peter Obi’s recent press conference regarding the controversy surrounding President Bola Tinubu‘s academic records and identity. In a statement on his show, “The Morning Show” on Arise TV, Dr. Abati described Obi’s actions as unnecessary, implying that the former Governor of Anambra State was simply seeking media attention and publicity, which he undoubtedly received.

During the press conference held in Abuja, Peter Obi called on President Tinubu to clarify the ongoing dispute about his academic record at Chicago State University (CSU). He also urged the President to reveal his true identity to Nigerians and the world, highlighting the international embarrassment the incident has caused.

Dr. Abati suggested that if Peter Obi was considering a career change, he should think about evangelism. He remarked, “When I saw the press conference by Mr. Peter Obi, I thought it was needless. If Mr. Peter Obi is considering a career in evangelism, yes, there are many people who have gone from other careers into evangelism. But within the framework of the electoral process, what he did was just seeking media attention, looking for publicity.

Abati further noted that if Obi had legitimate grievances within the electoral process, he should pursue them through the legal system, as his opponent Atiku Abubakar has done. The last time Waziri Atiku Abubakar had a press conference, he came out and said he wanted the candidate of the NNPP, Rabiu Kwankwaso, to join him, and also Peter Obi of the Labour Party to join him. The Labour Party released a statement and said they were not part of it. Is it that now, the Labour Party has changed its mind?” he questioned.

Abati emphasized that the appropriate forum for Peter Obi to address his concerns is the court of law, and not through media attention and moralizing. He also stressed that the matter regarding the CSU certificate controversy is now before the Supreme Court, which is the only entity that can make a final decision on the matter.

Despite the controversy and public attention generated by Peter Obi’s press conference, Abati’s critique suggests that the legal process should be the primary avenue for addressing such issues within the framework of the electoral process.
