Ondo PDP Calls for Governor Akeredolu’s Impeachment, House of Assembly Responds

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has raised concerns over the prolonged absence of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, who has reportedly been out of the state since April this year. The PDP is now demanding that the State House of Assembly initiate the impeachment process against the governor, alleging a violation of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

In a statement released by the State Publicity Secretary, Kennedy Peretei, the PDP expressed its deep unease about the state’s situation in the governor’s absence, describing it as being on “auto-pilot.” The party has called upon the lawmakers to take action in accordance with the constitution to prevent the state from descending into anarchy.

The PDP has also urged the State Assembly to invoke sections 189(1) to establish a Medical Panel responsible for assessing Governor Akeredolu’s medical status. This call is rooted in the party’s commitment to safeguard the interests of the state’s residents.

In response to these allegations, the State House of Assembly, represented by its speaker, Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi, has urged the people of Ondo to disregard the opposition party’s claims. The Assembly emphasized that Governor Akeredolu has been dutifully performing his constitutional duties and has not violated any aspect of the Constitution.

This development follows the PDP’s prior call for the governor to either resume his duties or resign, a demand stemming from his extended absence in the state following his return from a medical vacation abroad.
