Ejes Gist News reports that Abdulrasheed Bawa has been in the custody of the DSS since June 2023. Sources indicate that the former EFCC chairman has been compelled to surrender over N580 million that he allegedly acquired through illicit means during his tenure as the head of the anti-graft agency.

One source stated, “Over N580 million has been retrieved from the incarcerated former chairman of the anti-graft agency, EFCC,” in an interview with Sahara Reporters.

The revelation comes amidst mounting calls from various quarters for Bawa’s release from detention. The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) had previously urged the federal government to either take legal action against Bawa or release him from detention. These calls have added to the controversy surrounding Bawa’s arrest and the recovery of the substantial sum of money.

The recovery of such a large amount raises questions about the origins of the funds and their intended use, and it highlights the ongoing efforts to combat corruption within the Nigerian government and its institutions.
