FCT Minister Orders Demolition of Covid-19 Market in Abuja.
Abuja, Nigeria – In a move aimed at improving security and sanitation within the nation’s capital, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has issued an order to demolish the Covid-19 market located in Area 11, Abuja.
The directive was disclosed by the Director of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), Osi Braimah, while addressing journalists during the demolition of shanty stores that had been constructed within the market.
Braimah emphasized that the removal of shanties and illegal settlements in Area 11 and other parts of the city is a response to the ongoing issues of insecurity faced by residents.
“This is an ongoing exercise conducted by various agencies of the FCT,” Braimah explained. “AEPB has been given a marching order by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to scale up the demolition of all shanties, illegal settlements, and squatter camps in the FCT.”

This measure is intended to enhance city sanitation and address the associated problems of insecurity, according to Braimah. He pointed out that many of the people residing in the shanties lacked proper addresses and identification, which contributed to the security challenges.
“It is paramount that we scale up our efforts to achieve the objectives set out for us by the FCT Minister,” Braimah stressed.
Before embarking on the demolitions, the AEPB typically issues abatement notices to inform the affected parties. This approach ensures that property owners have an opportunity to comply with regulations and avoid the erection of illegal structures on empty plots.
