Speaking at the inaugural lecture of the African World Lecture Series, Adichie introduced Peter Obi as “the man who won the presidential election.” In a side chat with her audience, she reiterated that Obi was widely believed to have won the election.

“I want to recognize the presence of a man I deeply respect and a man who I think is a beacon of hope not just for Nigeria but for Africa. And he’s the man who many of us know won the election in Nigeria,” Adichie affirmed.

Adichie further praised Obi for displaying a rare quality in politicians: genuine humility.

The celebrated novelist did not stop at her proclamation of Obi’s victory. She expressed her dissatisfaction with the 2023 election process in Nigeria. Adichie had previously written to U.S. President Joe Biden, highlighting her concerns about the elections, which she believed were deliberately manipulated rather than marred by technical faults.

During her lecture, Adichie insisted that there was substantial evidence to support the claim that Peter Obi had won the elections. She also emphasized that the results of the polls had left many Nigerian youth disillusioned.

“I have to believe that there is hope for Nigeria,” Adichie remarked optimistically. “I mean there are many other things I’m enraged about, don’t get me started about women in the world, but what’s happening in Nigeria is quite simple.”

“We had an election in February that was deeply flawed, and we have a person who we’ve been told is a winner who did not win the election, and this has been shown over and over, there’s evidence for this.”

Adichie’s passionate lecture not only addressed the contentious 2023 election but also touched on the disillusionment of Nigerian youth and the importance of holding onto hope in the face of challenges.

The novelist’s remarks have added depth to the ongoing discussions surrounding the 2023 Nigerian presidential election and the role of young people in shaping the nation’s future. Adichie’s commitment to justice and her advocacy for transparency in electoral processes reflect the concerns of many Nigerians.
