The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has pledged that the commission will ensure justice is served in the tragic case of Afolabi Stephen, a 19-year-old Nigerian student allegedly killed by policemen in Manitoba, Canada.

Describing the incident as wicked, Dabiri-Erewa expressed shock in a condolence message and stated that NIDCOM is in contact with the Nigerian mission in Ottawa, receiving assurances from Canadian authorities about a thorough investigation.

According to reports, Afolabi Stephen lost his life on December 31, 2023, in Manitoba, Canada. The Winnipeg, Manitoba Police Department disclosed that officers responded to a call about a young male acting “erratically.” Despite attempts to calm him, the situation escalated, resulting in the discharge of a firearm by the police, leading to the young man’s untimely demise.

In the statement issued by NIDCOM’s Director of Media and Public Relations, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, condolences were extended to the family and friends of Afolabi, accompanied by prayers for his soul to rest in perfect peace. Dabiri-Erewa emphasized the commission’s commitment to ensuring a thorough investigation into the incident, assuring that justice will prevail.

As the international community awaits the outcome of the investigation, concerns over the circumstances surrounding Afolabi Stephen’s death continue to mount.
