Bandits Strike at Confluence University, Abduct Students During Late-Night Attack.

Tragedy struck at the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTEC) in Osara, Okene, Kogi State, on Thursday night as bandits invaded the campus, abducting an undisclosed number of students. The attack occurred around 9 p.m. while students were studying for their upcoming exams, which are scheduled to commence on Monday, May 13.

According to eyewitness accounts, the bandits entered the university through the bush and made their way to three lecture halls, where they began shooting into the air to scare the students. The students were trapped inside the halls as the bandits started taking them away. The attack caused widespread panic, with students in other halls fleeing in various directions to safety.

Local security guards and conventional security personnel at the gate engaged the bandits, minimizing the damage and preventing them from advancing beyond the first three halls. A student who wished to remain anonymous recounted how he and some colleagues hid in the bush for over an hour before venturing out when the situation became calm.

The Vice Chancellor of CUSTEC, Prof. Abdulraman Asipita, confirmed the incident but declined to provide details on the number of students abducted. “I don’t talk to journalists on incidents like this, but I want you to know that we are on top of the situation,” he said.

 

Efforts to reach the Commissioner of Police in Kogi, Mr. Bethrand Onuoha, and the State Security Adviser, Retired Cdre Jerry Omodara, were unsuccessful, as calls to their lines were neither picked nor returned.
