Ali Ndume, the Senator representing Borno South, has urged for the reversal of the electricity tariff hike, citing its ill-timed imposition amidst ongoing economic challenges faced by Nigerians.

In a statement released to newsmen in Abuja on Saturday, Ndume expressed concern over the recent approval by the Federal Government, through the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), of a 300 per cent tariff increment for Band A consumers.

This move allows power distribution companies to raise electricity prices for city dwellers from N68 to N225 per kilowatt-hour, effective from April 1, 2024.

Ndume condemned the decision, emphasizing the need for the Federal Government to reconsider its stance in the best interest of Nigerians. He highlighted the multitude of challenges currently confronting citizens, including inflation, reduced purchasing power, insecurity, and general hardship.

“The timing of this hike is very wrong,” Ndume asserted, noting that Nigerians are still reeling from the removal of fuel subsidy last year. He stressed that the populace is yet to recover from the adverse effects of this policy shift, making the imposition of additional financial burdens unjustifiable.

Expressing his dismay at the lack of prior consultation with the National Assembly, Ndume underscored the importance of engaging representatives of the people in decision-making processes that directly impact their welfare.

“The Federal Government needs to provide stable electricity, reduce inflation, stabilize the naira, and lower prices of food commodities before placing additional responsibilities on the populace,” Ndume remarked, advocating for a comprehensive approach to addressing economic challenges.

He further urged the Federal Government to allow the National Assembly the opportunity to intervene and consult on matters affecting the welfare of Nigerians, emphasizing the legislators’ role as representatives who understand the plight of the people.

In conclusion, Ndume stressed the importance of empathy and realism in governance, urging policymakers to prioritize the well-being of citizens in all decision-making processes.
