60 PDP Lawmakers Set to Decamp Amidst Party Turmoil

A group of 60 lawmakers affiliated with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) within the House of Representatives have issued a stern ultimatum, declaring their intention to defect unless the acting national chairman, Umar Ililya Damagum, steps down from his position.

 

In accordance with the party’s constitution, the lawmakers emphasized the necessity for Damagum’s replacement to hail from the North Central region.

They expressed concern over Damagum’s alleged alignment with FCT minister Nyesom Wike, contending that such affiliations have compromised the PDP’s leadership structure, effectively ceding control to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ejes Gist Media reports that Honorable Ugochinyere Ikenga, leading a group of five lawmakers, conveyed these demands during a press briefing held at the National Assembly on Monday. Ikenga condemned Damagum’s purported involvement in activities detrimental to the party’s interests, accusing him of betraying the PDP for personal gain.

Drawing a parallel with the political journey of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Ikenga underscored the importance of steadfast opposition, suggesting that wavering loyalty could jeopardize the party’s prospects. The lawmakers emphasized the urgency of Damagum’s resignation, warning that his continued tenure could irreparably harm the PDP.
