In lieu of the sentence handed down on Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara, here are things that you might not be aware of.

In Kano, Nigeria, a prominent scholar of the Qadiriyya Islamic sect named Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara, 52, was charged with blasphemy against the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

He is the younger brother of Karibullah Nasiru Kabara, their late father’s successor, and the son of Sheikh Nasiru Kabara, a former leader of the Qadiriyya sect in West Africa.

Even though he always claimed to have received the majority of his education from his father for almost 25 years of his life, he attended ATC Gwale in Kano before moving to Iraq to further his studies in Islamic theology.

Following in the footsteps of his father, Abduljabbar was well-known among Muslim communities in Nigeria as a Qadiriyya adherent and a scholar of the Sunni faith.

He did, however, express his preference for the Shia sect in an interview in 2020, saying: “After a thoroughly long time of research that I have made by myself, I realised that Shi’a has more scriptural evidence over Sunni,” and that “I will not bother myself if you call me a Shi’a, but I will be concerned with calling me a Sunni.”

Through his teachings and public remarks, Abduljabbar was repeatedly accused of blasphemy against the Prophet Muhammad and some of the Prophet’s companions.

Some hadiths (teachings of the Prophet Muhammad) narrated by prominent Islamic scholars like Anas Ibn Malik, Bukhari, and Muslim, in Abduljabbar’s opinion, are accusations against Muhammad, and he (Abduljabbar) refers to them as either false or inaccurate.

After being reported to the state government by Islamic scholars from the Izala, Salafiyya, Tijaniyyah, and Qadiriyya sects in Kano, Abduljabbar was imprisoned by the state government.

They claimed to have brought “nine blasphemy cases that Abduljabbar made reference to in his preaching towards the Prophet Muhammad in video and audio formats, which will serve as a reference that Abduljabbar is making blasphemy towards the Prophet Muhammad, and that if care is not taken, the blasphemy will lead to bloodshed and chaos in the State.”

The governor of Kano state, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, made the decision to step in and arrange a debate between Abduljabbar and his critics so that he could defend his preaching with biblical support.

The debate between him and four other Islamic scholars serving as the representatives of Izala, Salafiyya, Tijjaniyya, and Qadiriyya, respectively, was formally organised by the government of Kano State on July 10, 2021.

Professor Salisu Shehu of Bayero University Kano presided over the discussion, which was overseen by the Kano State Ministry for Religious Affairs.

After the discussion was over, Professor Shehu, the debate’s moderator, declared that Abduljabbar had not responded to any of the questions posed by the other scholars.

Although he had assistants to help him, he claimed that Abduljabbar “diverted questions by giving irrelevant information or by saying there was no time to make references from the more than 500 books he brought to the debate, while the other scholars have given references and directly addressed Abduljabbar’s questions.”

Abduljabbar was remanded in custody on July 17, 2021 due to an ongoing accusation of blasphemy against the Prophet.
