Court of Appeal Nullifies Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo’s Election, Orders Rerun in Akwa Ibom Federal Constituency.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has nullified the election of Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo, the representative for Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom State in the House of Representatives.

This ruling comes after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Ukpong-Udo of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) as the winner in the February 25 elections, following a supplementary election in the constituency.

However, the victory faced opposition from Glory Edet, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who challenged the results. The Akwa Ibom State National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal subsequently ruled in favor of Edet, sacking the YPP candidate and ordering a rerun.

In a bid to contest this decision, Ukpong-Udo sought recourse from the Court of Appeal, aiming to set aside the tribunal’s ruling. On Wednesday, a panel of the Court of Appeal, led by Justice Abba Mohammed, upheld the tribunal’s verdict and ordered a rerun.

The details of the rerun remain unclear, raising questions about whether it applies to the entire federal constituency or only to the polling units where INEC had declared the results inconclusive.

This uncertainty adds a layer of complexity to the electoral landscape in Akwa Ibom State.
