Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri Commends INEC for Conducting Successful Gubernatorial Polls

Bayelsa state Governor, Douye Diri, has expressed appreciation to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the smooth conduct of the gubernatorial polls held on Saturday, November 11.

Diri secured victory over his closest rival, Timipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress (APC), earning a second term in office as the leader of the oil-rich state.

Governor Diri commended INEC for organizing a fair contest despite facing numerous challenges during the electoral process.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, November 14, Diri stated, “The conduct of the election sincerely could be adjudged to be free, fair, and transparent.”

Acknowledging the human effort involved in the electoral process, Diri emphasized that perfection was unattainable but praised the electoral umpire for managing the challenges.

He asserted, “But it is a human effort so it could not be a perfect one. There were challenges.”

The governor highlighted the effectiveness of the Biometric Verification and Authentication System (BVAS) during the elections, stating, “I want to believe that this is one of the best elections they have ever conducted where the BVAS has been brought into full test.”

Addressing concerns about delays in releasing results, Diri explained that the unique challenges faced by Bayelsa were understood by those familiar with the state’s electoral dynamics.

He referenced the boat mishap that occurred, leading to the postponement of the election in some areas.

Diri concluded by acknowledging the curiosity and suspicion surrounding the delayed results but attributed it to the exceptional circumstances, saying, “A lot of people became very curious and suspicious about the release of the results and final declaration.”

Despite these challenges, Governor Douye Diri expressed confidence in the overall success of the election and the role played by INEC.
