Tinubu Files Emergency Application to Review Release of Academic Records.
President Bola Tinubu has taken swift legal action to challenge a recent judgment that ordered the release of his academic records to his political opponent, Atiku Abubakar. The decision was issued by Judge Jeffrey Gilbert of the United States District Court on September 19 as part of an ongoing election challenge proceeding in Nigeria.
In compliance with the judge’s order, Chicago State University (CSU) was preparing to release Mr. Tinubu’s academic records to Atiku Abubakar on September 21, with the additional requirement that school administrators certify the authenticity of these records under oath.
However, Mr. Tinubu has submitted an emergency application in the district, seeking a senior judge’s review of Judge Gilbert’s order and requesting a delay in execution until at least September 25. This move comes in light of the timing for CSU’s compliance with the order.
In a statement, Mr. Tinubu’s legal team, led by Christopher Carmichael, explained: “Intervenor intends to file, by the end of the day, a substantive brief addressing the errors in the Magistrate’s decision.

To address this matter promptly, Judge Nancy Maldonado of the district has scheduled an urgent hearing for 3:00 p.m. local time. All parties involved, including representatives from CSU, Mr. Tinubu, and Mr. Atiku, are expected to participate in the virtual conference.
Further details will be provided as the situation develops.
